How Liverpool’s Carabao Cup Final Berth Shakes Up Premier League Title Race

Liverpool’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup semi-final has sent them through to a Wembley showdown with Newcastle United on March 16th.

While the Reds celebrate their cup final berth, the fixture congestion caused by the final could have a significant impact on their Premier League title aspirations.

Liverpool’s league match against Aston Villa, originally scheduled for March 15th, has been moved to February 19th to accommodate the cup final.

This fixture change creates a potential swing in the title race, with Liverpool potentially extending their lead over Arsenal.

Currently, Liverpool sit atop the Premier League table, six points clear of second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand.

The postponement of the Merseyside derby against Everton due to Storm Darragh has further complicated the fixture list, with the rescheduled match set for February 12th.

With Arsenal having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the semi-finals, they will have a game in hand when Liverpool play Aston Villa on February 19th.

This means that Liverpool could potentially stretch their lead to a commanding 12 points by the time Arsenal face Chelsea on March 16th.

However, the congested fixture list presents a challenge for Liverpool. Starting with their FA Cup fourth-round tie against Plymouth Argyle on Sunday, February 9th, Liverpool will play six matches in just 17 days.

This grueling schedule has prompted Liverpool manager Arne Slot to voice his concerns about the limited matchday squad sizes allowed in England.

Slot questioned the rule limiting teams to 20 players in a matchday squad, particularly given the demanding schedule faced by English clubs competing in multiple competitions.

He argued that larger squads are necessary to manage player fatigue and maintain a competitive edge across all tournaments.

“That is one of the only things I don’t understand here in England,” Slot remarked. “Everywhere around the world, and in Europe as well when we play Champions League, we can take 23 players to the game…So, I don’t understand why we don’t go to 23 in this country because this country plays the most games everywhere around the world and we only have 20 players that we can take to the games.”

Whether Liverpool can navigate this demanding schedule and maintain their lead in the title race remains to be seen.
