Uganda head coach Nicholas Natuhereza was full of pride and emotion after guiding the Gazelles to victory over Egypt in the Women’s AfroBasket Zone Five Qualifiers, securing their place at the 2025 continental championship.

Uganda’s 74-63 triumph in Cairo was particularly significant for Natuhereza, as it avenged their painful 2023 final loss to the same opponents.

Reflecting on the victory, Natuhereza recalled his first stint with the national team in 2017, also in Cairo, which ended in disappointment.

The coach emphasized the significance of finally overcoming Egypt, especially on their home court.

“The first time I coached the national team in 2017 was here in Cairo, and it was a tough tournament for us. We also lost to the same team in the final of the 2023 Qualifiers at home, and it was tough to take. This feels sweeter, winning in their backyard,” he said.

Uganda executed a near-perfect game plan, using a dominant second-quarter run to seize control.

The Gazelles out-rebounded Egypt 53-34 and held the hosts to just 4-of-29 shooting from beyond the arc.

Despite committing 28 turnovers, Uganda capitalized on their chances and never let Egypt find their rhythm.

For Natuhereza, the victory was more than just a ticket to the AfroBasket—it was a testament to years of perseverance and team growth.

“I am happy for my team and proud of all the players for the work they have put in to win this final game that has been a problem through these years,” he added.

With this win, Uganda heads to the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket as Zone Five champions, while Egypt’s hopes of a seventh consecutive appearance now rest on securing a wild card entry.
