Tanzania President Hosts Manchester United Co-Owner in Dar es Salaam

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan welcomed Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to State House in Dar es Salaam on April 11, 2025, in a remarkable meeting that blended sports, conservation, and diplomacy.

The encounter sparked excitement across East Africa, particularly among football enthusiasts eager for deeper connections between global sports icons and regional development.

During their high-profile discussion, President Samia and Sir Jim explored strategic partnerships in wildlife conservation, supported by the billionaire’s Six Rivers Foundation, as well as opportunities for advancing sports in Tanzania.

The meeting captured attention not just for its conservation initiatives but also for the symbolic connection to one of the world’s most famous football clubs.

Sir Jim presented President Samia with a Manchester United jersey, signed by the players, along with personal messages from head coach Ruben Amorim and legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

President Samia seized the moment to advocate for using Manchester United’s global influence to promote Tanzania as a prime tourist destination.

She encouraged Sir Jim to invest in grassroots sports development, including football academies aimed at nurturing young talent and improving infrastructure.

Sir Jim also reaffirmed his conservation commitment by highlighting efforts to restore the Selous Game Reserve, an ecological treasure in Tanzania.

The collaboration between his foundation and Tanzanian authorities aims to rejuvenate one of Africa’s largest protected areas.

As a token of cultural and sporting solidarity, President Samia gifted Sir Jim a framed photograph and a Taifa Stars jersey emblazoned with the slogan “Amazing Tanzania,” symbolizing the nation’s pride and aspirations for a stronger partnership.
