He’s Back Again, Mucureezi a Familiar Face at Kakyeka, a new Mission

Few players in Ugandan football have had as intimate a relationship with Kakyeka Stadium as Paul Mucureezi.

From playing at Mbarara City to gracing the pitch as a visiting star with various Uganda Premier League clubs, his ties to the Ankole Lions run deep.

But on Wednesday, the attacking midfielder steps onto the turf once again, not as a fan favorite, but as a potential party spoiler.

Mucureezi, now donning the orange of NEC FC, is set to return to his old stomping ground in a fixture that could have serious implications at both ends of the UPL table.

NEC are locked in a tense title chase, while Mbarara City are desperately fighting to stay afloat in the top flight.

It’s a match layered with emotion, urgency, and high stakes, and Mucureezi finds himself at the heart of it.

Paul Mucureezi’s journey is a well-traveled one. He made his name at KCCA FC, but it was at Mbarara City where he became a household name in Western Uganda.

Between 2018 and 2020, he was the face of the Ankole Lions, guiding them to mid-table stability with flair and composure.

His performances earned him a move to Vipers SC in 2020, and although his time there was mixed, he remained a reliable figure.

He then signed for Kitara FC, first in the FUFA Big League and then returning to the UPL with them, before joining NEC, one of the surprise packages of the current campaign.

Today, the 31-year-old is a critical cog in NEC’s midfield, orchestrating attacks, scoring important goals, and providing the leadership required in high-pressure situations.

Haunting the Past – or Not Yet?

Interestingly, despite scoring against former sides like KCCA and Vipers, Mucureezi has yet to leave his mark against Mbarara City.

Each time he has returned to Kakyeka—with Vipers and Kitara—the performances have fallen short of the spectacle his reputation demands.

That stat adds extra intrigue to today’s encounter: Will this be the day Mucureezi finally silences his former fans—not with respect, but with ruthless professionalism?

With NEC in urgent need of points to keep pace with leaders Vipers SC, the stage is perfectly set for Mucureezi to finally break that duck.

Title Pressure vs Survival Instincts

NEC currently sit second on the UPL log, trailing Vipers by eight points. With the business end of the season rapidly approaching, there’s no room for slip-ups—especially not against a side battling relegation.

For Mbarara City, it’s a different type of pressure. Sitting just above the relegation zone, every point matters.

A defeat today, coupled with positive results for relegation rivals, could drag them deeper into the drop zone.

This is a classic ‘must-win’ for both sides—but for entirely different reasons.

Spotlight on Mucureezi

As one of NEC’s standout performers this season, Mucureezi’s influence cannot be overstated.

His ability to control the tempo, deliver precise passes, and pop up with goals in tight games makes him NEC’s go-to man in crucial fixtures.

Against his old club, in familiar territory, and with the title race on the line, this could be the day he delivers one of his trademark moments, the kind that defines seasons and silences doubters.
