“Tennis Saved My Life”: Athieno Credits Sport for Academic and Family Support

After stunning the crowd with her breakthrough victory at the 2025 Uganda Tennis Open, 23-year-old Patience Athieno has shared an emotional reflection on her journey to becoming Uganda’s newest tennis star.

A finalist at Victoria University pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Athieno clinched the Women’s Singles title at the Lugogo Tennis Complex, marking a milestone moment in her young career.

“I never expected to win this trophy because my dream was to reach the semifinals,” Athieno admitted.

“I am so happy that I am the champion and I am going to carry the same energy to the upcoming World University Games in Germany come July.”

Her journey into tennis began in 2012 when, at just eight years old, she picked up a racket and found her passion.

The road has been far from easy. At the 2023 Uganda Open, she suffered a quarterfinal loss to a Tanzanian opponent, a result that could have dampened her spirit. Instead, it became fuel for a remarkable comeback this year.

Athieno’s success is rooted in more than just athletic prowess. As the breadwinner in her family, she has used her tournament earnings to support her siblings. Tennis has also paved the way for her academic journey, earning her scholarships through secondary school and into university.

Since receiving a scholarship to Victoria University in 2022, Athieno has successfully balanced rigorous academic demands with international tennis competitions. She credits the university’s flexible, online learning model as a key enabler.

“I’m able to sit for exams at my own pace because of the comfort my university gives to students by allowing them to study online and even sit for exams still online, and that peace of mind helps me perform both in class and on the court,” she explained.

Her Uganda Open triumph not only elevated her status on the national stage but also served as critical preparation ahead of the World University Games in Germany this July.

It’s a platform she hopes to use to further prove her capability and continue carrying Uganda’s flag with pride.
