WTA Chief Addresses “Systemic” Scheduling Issue in Tennis

Portia Archer, CEO of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), has called the scheduling of women’s matches a “systemic” problem in top-level tennis.

Her comments follow criticism of the French Open, which featured no women’s matches in its prime-time night sessions this year.

Archer plans to discuss the issue with French Open director Amelie Mauresmo to “effect change,” stating it’s a “missed opportunity” that disappoints fans and potentially TV partners.

While Mauresmo cited shorter match lengths (best-of-three sets) and avoiding late finishes as reasons, Archer views the imbalance as a broader, foundational issue, not just at Grand Slams.

Former world number two Ons Jabeur also voiced her disappointment, calling the situation “unfortunate for women’s sports.”

Archer encourages fans to advocate for change, emphasizing the WTA’s commitment to equitable scheduling.
