FMU Confident New Sports Act Will Boost Motorsport Nationwide

Fred Obbo, chairman of the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) constitutional review working group, is confident that the National Sports Act 2023 will help accelerate sports development across the country.

Obbo led a four-member committee tasked with reviewing the FMU draft constitution to align with the act’s requirement for 75% national coverage in order to attain full federation status. He says the new framework will support long-term, sustainable growth.

“Our focus is on creating strong and viable structures for motorsport in Uganda. We want them to reflect sound governance, support policy and strategy development, and ensure the sport grows in a way that benefits the entire country,” Obbo said.

During an extraordinary general assembly held over the weekend in Lugogo, federation delegates shared input to guide the sport’s development. Obbo emphasized the need to broaden the sport’s reach.

“Motorsport has been growing beyond Kampala into other regions. We now need to push beyond just cars and motorcycles—bring in karts and other categories—to make it as inclusive and diverse as possible.”

The Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda is the official body mandated to oversee motorsport development across the country.
