Fort Portal came alive on Saturday as thousands of runners, fitness lovers, and culture fans hit the streets for the 2025 Fort Portal City Marathon.
Held on July 19, the event drew huge crowds and served as a high-energy curtain raiser for the upcoming Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon set for August 23 in Kasese.
Participants took on routes across 5km, 10km, 21km, and 42km, winding through some of Uganda’s most scenic spots. From the lush tea estates to crater lakes and cultural landmarks like the Karuzika Palace and the legendary Amabeere Ga Nyinamwiru caves, the marathon was more than a race—it was a celebration of Fort Portal’s natural beauty and heritage.
His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro graced the event, adding royal flair to a day already buzzing with energy and pride.
While the Fort Portal run was a standalone event, it doubled as a major activation for the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon. The Tusker Lite team used the platform to engage runners, build excitement, and get people registered for the country’s only World Athletics-certified marathon.
Speaking at the event, Denise Paula Nazzinda, Brand Manager for Tusker Lite at Uganda Breweries, said Fort Portal delivered in energy, but the big moment is still ahead.
“We’re gearing up for an unforgettable experience in Kasese—thousands of runners, breathtaking routes at the foothills of the Rwenzori, and the perfect blend of adventure, lifestyle, and celebration,” she said. “This year’s edition is going to be the biggest and boldest yet.”
Runners at Fort Portal echoed the excitement, with many saying the promise of world-class scenery and international standards made the Rwenzori race a must-do.
With nearly 6,000 runners expected from over 50 countries, the 2025 Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon is set to break records. Organizers are promising bigger crowds, more global attention, eco-conscious planning, and a major boost for tourism and local businesses.
Registration is open at UGX 60,000 for East African citizens and residents, and USD 60 for international runners. Sign up now at rwenzorimarathon.com/registration.
