As Uganda takes center stage hosting the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), rapper Mun G has made an impassioned plea to the government: support the youth beyond the football pitch.
Speaking to NBS Sport, the award-winning artist said CHAN is a rare moment to celebrate Uganda’s identity, creativity, and untapped potential.
“It shines a spotlight on Uganda, and that benefits everyone — not just the players, but also the artists, vendors, creatives and the youth,” Mun G said.
He praised the tournament for providing platforms for musicians, dancers, and performers to reach wide audiences, whether at stadiums, fan zones or sponsor events. But he quickly pivoted to call on leaders to do more, and do it consistently.
“Big events come and go,” he said. “But young people are still out here every day with big dreams and no support. Some want to be football stars, others want to be on stage or behind a camera. But they’re blocked by poverty, lack of facilities and mentorship.”
Mun G called on the government to use the energy and attention around CHAN as a wake-up call. He pushed for investment in community-based programs, arts centers, sports academies and public-private partnerships that can give youth a real shot at success.
“We need systems that develop raw talent from the grassroots,” he added. “That’s how you build stars and reduce crime, unemployment, and hopelessness.”
With Uganda hosting CHAN for the first time, the rapper hopes it won’t just be remembered for the football, but as a spark that led to long-term investment in the country’s youth and cultural future.
