Next Media Launches NBS Sport 2 to Meet Uganda’s Expanding Sports Coverage Needs

Next Media has officially launched NBS Sport 2, a new sports channel dedicated to live sports content. The channel will air the first live action on Saturday, August 9, at exactly 8 AM on AfroMobile, where it will broadcast exclusively.

The launch marks a major step in Next Media’s continued investment in sports broadcasting.

Since the inception of NBS Sport in 2022, the volume of sports events across Uganda has grown, leading to increasing pressure on the existing channel’s capacity.

Andrew Kabuura, the Head of Sports Broadcast at Next Media, explained that the new channel responds directly to that growth.

“We’ve reached a point where we have more content than we can handle with one channel. NBS Sport 2 is here to ease that load. It will be our live action channel,” Kabuura said.

He added that the current structure had made it hard to cover multiple games happening simultaneously, especially in different venues.

“Now we can be present at different basketball games, rugby matches, boxing events, and more, all at once. Viewers won’t have to worry about whether their team will be shown.”

Kabuura also noted that NBS Sport 2 will focus heavily on live action, with fewer replays or studio shows, enabling broader coverage of disciplines that previously received limited airtime.

With its exclusive presence on AfroMobile, NBS Sport 2 is also part of Next Media’s push into digital-first broadcasting. Viewers will be able to stream live games directly from their phones, wherever they are.

“AfroMobile has transformed how audiences access content in Uganda. Now, you can watch authentic African stories directly on your phone, anytime, anywhere. That’s why NBS Sport 2 will air exclusively on AfroMobile,” Kabuura said.

The first live broadcast on the new channel will be the Gulu Rugby 7s, with coverage starting at 8 AM, all the way till 6 PM.

Kabuura had hinted at the expansion earlier on in May during the launch of The State of Ugandan Sport Symposium at the Next Media Park.

Back then, he pointed to a shift toward a more inclusive and comprehensive model of sports coverage.

“When we launched in 2022, we were worried about filling 24 hours. Now, the opposite is true. We have too much content for one platform,” he said.

The growth of NBS Sport has been rapid since its launch in June 2022 under the mission of “Championing Ugandan Sport”.

With daily shows, live broadcasts, and sports analysis, the channel has quickly become the country’s leading 24/7 sports platform.

The addition of NBS Sport 2 signals a new phase, offering more airtime for emerging disciplines, better scheduling for live events, and a sharper focus on real-time coverage.
