Lille secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Roma in the UEFA Europa League, thanks to an astonishing late display from goalkeeper Berke Ozer, who saved three consecutive penalties in the final 10 minutes.
Lille took the lead early through Hakon Arnar Haraldsson’s sixth-minute goal. The defining moment arrived in the 80th minute when Roma was awarded a penalty for handball.
The drama unfolded as Ozer saved the first effort from substitute Artem Dovbyk, but a retake was ordered due to encroachment.
Ozer saved Dovbyk’s second attempt, but this time was penalized for moving too early.
On the third try, Matias Soule took responsibility, but Ozer denied him again, securing the win that finally stood.
A stunned Roma boss, Gian Piero Gasperini, called the penalty sequence “an almost unique, random situation, which ultimately compromised the result.”
