Dr Donald Rukare has been elected President of Commonwealth Sport following a vote at the General Assembly in Glasgow.
His appointment makes him the first leader from the Africa region to take charge of the organisation at a time when preparations are intensifying for Glasgow 2026 and the Centenary Games in Amdavad in 2030.
Rukare steps into the role with more than thirty years of work across sport, law, diplomacy, and development.
He has served as a World Aquatics Bureau Member, Vice President of Africa Aquatics, Vice President of Commonwealth Sport, President of Commonwealth Games Uganda, and most recently as Interim President.
His election reflects broad backing from the seventy four member nations and territories for his focus on unity, athlete support, and strategic growth.
Rukare said he was honoured by the trust shown in him and pledged to lead with integrity and transparency.
He noted the importance of carrying the momentum into Glasgow 2026, preparing for the Malta 2027 Youth Games, and delivering an inspiring Centenary Games in India in 2030.
Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadleir welcomed his election, saying his collaborative approach and commitment to sustainable development align with the organisation’s current strategic direction.
She said the Movement is entering a period of major transformation and that Rukare’s leadership will be key as the next chapters of the Games are shaped.
