FA Hits Chelsea and West Ham with Fines After Derby Chaos

The Football Association has fined Chelsea £325,000 and West Ham £300,000 following a “mass confrontation” during their Premier League clash in January.

The incident erupted in stoppage time at Stamford Bridge after West Ham’s Adama Traoré shoved Marc Cucurella, sparking a melee between both sets of players.

Following a VAR review, Hammers defender Jean-Clair Todibo was sent off for grabbing Chelsea’s João Pedro by the neck.

An independent commission labeled the scenes “serious and unsightly,” noting that:
• Incitement: Three Chelsea players were found to have incited the crowd during the scuffle.
• Aggravating Factors: Both clubs received heavy fines due to multiple previous breaches of FA discipline rules.
• Provocation: While Traoré’s reaction was the catalyst, the commission noted Cucurella was “not wholly without fault” for inviting the initial confrontation.

Both clubs admitted to the charges of failing to ensure their players behaved in an orderly fashion.

Despite the chaos, Chelsea walked away with a 3-2 victory thanks to a late Enzo Fernández winner.
