Ugandan long distance runner Jacob Kiplimo is expected to return home on Tuesday at 2:00 PM East African Time after setting a new men’s half marathon world record at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon in Portugal.
Kiplimo delivered a stunning performance in Lisbon, clocking 57 minutes and 20 seconds to set a new official world record in the men’s half marathon, a result that drew global attention across the athletics community.
The achievement marks another major milestone in the career of the Ugandan star, who now returns home as a world record holder. It also reinforces his reputation as one of the dominant long distance runners of his generation.
Kiplimo has now produced two performances faster than the standing world record in the half marathon. Earlier this year he ran 56 minutes and 42 seconds at the Barcelona Half Marathon, though that mark was not ratified by World Athletics. His official record in Lisbon therefore carries added significance.
The Lisbon race also formed part of Kiplimo’s preparations for his next major assignment as he transitions toward the marathon distance.
His focus now turns to the 2026 London Marathon scheduled for April 26, where he will be aiming to extend his strong form on one of the world’s biggest marathon stages.
