Jannik Sinner returned to the top of men’s tennis after defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in the Monte Carlo Masters final.
The 24-year-old Italian, who last held the No.1 ranking in November, claimed his third Masters 1000 title of the year following triumphs at Indian Wells and Miami.
In windy conditions that produced 83 unforced errors, Sinner held his nerve in a tense tie-break before overturning a second-set deficit to seal victory. The win extends his unbeaten run in Masters events to 22 matches and marks his 27th ATP Tour title.
“It has been an interesting week trying to learn how to play again on clay,” Sinner said. “Having this trophy and getting back to number one means a lot to me.”
Elsewhere, 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva rallied from a set down to beat Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3 and win the Linz Open, her fifth WTA Tour crown.
