Preparations for the 2026 U20 Africa Cup Championship in Uganda have officially begun after Uganda Rugby appointed Sarah Adong as chairperson of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the tournament.
The U20 Africa Cup, also known as the Barthes Trophy, is scheduled to run from August 5 to 18 at Hoima City Stadium.
Adong’s appointment was formally confirmed by Uganda Rugby President Godwin Kayangwe, who cited her leadership credentials and contribution to the sport as key reasons behind the decision.
She was recognised for her role in the organisation of the Kyadondo 7s, as well as her extensive coverage of local and international rugby events. Uganda Rugby also highlighted her passion, loyalty and strategic ability.
Adong is an active member of Kyadondo Rugby Club, chairperson of the West Nile Rugby Association and an accomplished sports journalist, bringing a broad mix of rugby and administrative experience to the role.
She has set her sights on delivering what she described as the biggest edition of the tournament yet by bringing together stakeholders across Uganda and the continent.
Adong plans to unite cultural institutions, schools, tertiary institutions, media, government agencies and sponsors in a bid to grow appreciation of youth rugby in Uganda and Africa.
Her LOC, made up of experts in international event management, will work closely with Rugby Africa to strengthen trust and share lessons across the continent.
Through the role, Adong also hopes to inspire more women to pursue leadership and equality in sport.
“Every step needs a ladder,” she said.
She added that the appointment is another step in her ambition to serve rugby at a higher level while helping strengthen local competitions through shared expertise.
The tournament is named after former Rugby Afrique president Pierre Barthés and will feature nine Under-20 national teams.
Hosts Uganda will compete alongside Kenya, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Senegal, Madagascar, Côte d’Ivoire and Zambia.
The competition is expected to provide a major platform for young talent while also fuelling regional rivalries and strengthening the development pathway for future Rugby Cranes players.
