The 2026 Ankole Cup will begin on June 6 in Bushenyi, with 13 districts from the Ankole sub-region confirmed for the fifth edition of the tournament.
Hosts Bushenyi will face Sheema in the opening fixture as the competition returns with revised player eligibility rules and renewed backing from regional leaders.
Organisers confirmed that each team will register 20 players born within their district, with only five slots reserved for players from outside, in a move aimed at strengthening local talent development.
The tournament has increasingly served as a pathway to elite football, with Hillary Mukundane progressing from the competition to Vipers after emerging from Bushenyi.
Mwine Mpaka said the changes are intended to reinforce the competition’s role in identifying and nurturing players from within the region.
Members of Parliament across the 13 participating districts have pledged support, while Peter Agaba and Francis Mwijukye expressed confidence in their teams’ prospects.
Dan Kimosho, in a lighter moment, joked that organisers should consider including “prayer warriors” to counter Ibanda’s perceived advantage linked to rain disruptions during matches.
Youth MP Mercy Kanyesigye said the tournament offers young players a platform to showcase their ability and pursue opportunities in sport.
Ankole Cup organisers will hold a dinner on May 19, where Thomas Tayebwa is set to be unveiled as the tournament patron ahead of the competition’s start.
