Charlton’s Nathan Asiimwe Receives Call to Uganda Cranes National Team

Charlton Athletics’ rising star, Nathan Asiimwe, has received his first-ever call-up to the Uganda Cranes national team for the upcoming international friendlies. The 19-year-old defender, who has spent his entire life in England, expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity.

Speaking to FUFA media in an interview published on Monday, Asiimwe shared his astonishment at the unexpected call-up, stating, “It’s the first time being called to the national team, it’s a proud moment for me and my family.” Despite the suddenness of the news, Asiimwe embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly, eagerly anticipating the change in environment after being at Charlton for the entirety of his footballing journey.

“It was unexpected as well. I just found out this (last) week. I’m looking forward to the change in environment because I’ve been at Charlton all my life,” Asiimwe remarked. He expressed his readiness to contribute to the team’s efforts, emphasizing his commitment to giving his best on the field during the upcoming matches.

The Uganda Cranes are set to face off against Comoros and Ghana on Friday and Tuesday next week, respectively, with both matches slated to be played in Marrakech, Morocco. Asiimwe conveyed his eagerness to participate in the fixtures, stating, “We have got good fixtures and I’ll just try to give my best for the team like I always do.”

Asiimwe’s journey with Charlton Athletic began in 2019 when he joined the club’s ranks as a 12-year-old. His hard work and dedication culminated in his League One debut in May last year against Cheltenham. Since then, he has become an integral part of the team, having played 17 League One matches this season alone.
