Ivory Coast produced one of the biggest statements of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far, defeating Ecuador 1-0 with a dramatic 90th-minute winner from Amad Diallo to end La Tricolor’s 19-match unbeaten run.
The Elephants showed courage, organisation and attacking ambition throughout a tightly contested Group E opener, with their late victory marking a memorable return to the World Cup stage.
Fresh from a confidence-boosting friendly victory over France earlier in the month, Ivory Coast started brightly and nearly found an early breakthrough.
Bazoumana Toure forced Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez into an excellent low save after a composed effort inside the box.
However, Ecuador quickly responded and demonstrated why they arrived in the tournament on such an impressive unbeaten streak.
Sebastian Beccacece’s side pressed aggressively and nearly took the lead when John Yeboah capitalised on Emmanuel Agbadou’s mistake before smashing a left-footed strike against the crossbar.
The woodwork denied Ecuador again before half-time, with Alan Minda hitting the same spot after being played through brilliantly by Pedro Vite.
Despite creating the clearer chances, La Tri could not find a way past Yahia Fofana as the Ivory Coast goalkeeper stood firm.
The second half continued at a frantic pace, with both teams pushing for the breakthrough. Ivory Coast came closest shortly after the restart when Elye Wahi connected with Yan Diomande’s delivery, only to see his first-time effort crash against the crossbar.
Ecuador gradually regained control and began threatening once again. Gonzalo Plata tested Fofana with a powerful strike that brought the travelling Ecuadorian supporters to their feet, but the goalkeeper remained unbeatable.
With the match appearing destined for a draw, Ivory Coast delivered a devastating final blow.
In the 90th minute, Wilfried Singo launched a brilliant solo run from deep inside his own half, powering through the Ecuador defence before delivering a perfectly timed pass across the box.
Amad Diallo showed composure beyond his years, guiding the ball beyond Galíndez to send the Ivory Coast supporters into celebration.
The victory ended Ecuador’s remarkable unbeaten run dating back to September 2024 and gave the Elephants a dream start to their World Cup campaign.
For Ivory Coast, the result provides huge momentum ahead of their difficult clash with four-time champions Germany on Saturday at 11 pm.
Ecuador, meanwhile, will need a response when they face World Cup debutants Curaçao on Sunday at 3 am, knowing another dropped result could leave their qualification hopes in danger after their early group-stage exit at the 2022 tournament.
