Karim Masaba, the Member of Parliament for Industrial Division in Mbale City, has been selected as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Sports Club, which unites various sports disciplines within Uganda’s Parliament.
Masaba succeeds former Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, who previously guided the club’s activities.
Speaking to NBS Sport, Masaba expressed gratitude for the confidence shown by fellow legislators and pledged to use the platform to strengthen regional cooperation through sports. He emphasized that sports remain a powerful tool for promoting unity, friendship, and collaboration across borders.
The new chairperson revealed that one of his priorities will be leveraging parliamentary sports activities to foster East African integration, encouraging both economic and political cooperation among member states.
“I intend to use this position to promote the integration of East Africa, creating opportunities for our countries to interact, learn from one another, and support mutual growth through sports and other social engagements,” Masaba said.
He also outlined plans to expand the club’s outreach programmes during visits to constituencies across the country. Sports activities, he noted, will be incorporated into these trips to strengthen ties between Parliament and local communities.
Beyond sports, Masaba stressed the importance of social responsibility initiatives that will allow MPs to engage directly with citizens and identify challenges affecting communities.
Highlighting gaps in sports infrastructure, he pledged to advocate for increased government support to nurture talent nationwide.
“We want every constituency we visit to benefit from sports activities and community engagements. Through these interactions, we shall identify areas lacking facilities and push for government intervention to improve infrastructure and support talent development,” he added.
The Parliamentary Sports Club has long played a role in promoting fitness, teamwork, and unity among legislators. Under Masaba’s leadership, it is expected to broaden its impact by linking sports with community development and regional integration.
His vision comes at a time when Uganda continues to prioritize sports as a catalyst for social transformation, youth empowerment, and regional cooperation, with hopes that improved infrastructure and investment will unlock the country’s vast sporting potential.
