Tokyo preferred over Kenya to host 2025 World Championships

World Athletics has selected Japan’s capital city Tokyo as the host of the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

Kenya’s capital Nairobi had officially bid to host the event with Silesia and Singapore also submitting their bids.

World Athletics, the sport’s governing body made the confirmation as the 2022 event got underway in Eugene, Oregon, USA. This year’s World Championships start a year later than planned due to COVID-19

The event will return to the host city of the 2020 Olympics, with the event marking the centenary celebrations of the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF).

The World Championships will next be hosted by Budapest in 2023.

“Within an extremely strong field of candidates Tokyo offered a compelling bid,” World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said after the decision of WA’s ruling Council.

“I hope this will be a shining light for Japan as they celebrate 100 years of the JAAF in 2025, by bringing world-class athletics back to the people in Tokyo.”

At the same meeting, the council also confirmed that Medulin and Pula, Croatia plus Tallahassee, Florida will host the Athletics Cross Country Championships in 2024 and 2026.

Japan last hosted the World Championships in 2007, albeit Osaka was chosen as the host city. Tokyo last hosted the event in 1991.
