The Uganda U20 men’s national team, the Hippos, defeated Tanzania 2-0 in their opening game of the CECAFA U20 AFCON Zonal Qualifiers, on Saturday.
The Hippos were the better side for 90 minutes and deservedly got the better of their East African neighbours.
Jackson Mayanja’s side had half-chances to take the lead but Isma Mugulusi could not evade the Tanzania defence with his goal-bound shot which was charged down after Abasi Kyeyune had failed to sort his feet while through on goal.
The pressure finally paid off just after the half-hour mark when Titus Ssematimba calmly slotted into the back of the net to hand Uganda a deserved lead.
Moments later, Rogers Mugisha doubled the Hippos lead who took a comfortable 2-0 lead into the break.
Tanzania’s best chance to get back into the game came on the hour mark but Samson Kasozi produced a stunning goal-line clearance to preserve the Hippos two-goal caution.
In the end, the Hippos saw out the victory and clean-sheet which will boost their confidence going into the second game against Ethiopia on Saturday, November 05.
Uganda is the defending champion of the CECAFA U20 Championship.
