In a late setback for the Uganda Lady Cranes, star player Emily Lekuru, commonly known as “Ferrari” for her blistering speed, won’t be joining the squad for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Dubai. Unforeseen work commitments have compelled her withdrawal.
Lekuru’s absence poses a challenge for the team, robbing them of her experience and try scoring prowess, particularly in terms of speed and finishing ability. Coach Charles Onen confirmed this development to NBS Sport, emphasizing the need for tactical adjustments and collective effort to fill the void.
“It is with regret that we announce Emily Lekuru will not be traveling with the Lady Cranes to Dubai for the upcoming Challenger Series. Unforeseen work commitments and a pressing deadline prevent her from joining us,” Coach Onen stated.
As an accountant, Lekuru’s work commitments tie her until January 15, making her unavailable for the tournament. Despite this hurdle, the Lady Cranes’ historic participation in the Challenger Series remains an exciting prospect. Fans are urged to support the team as they make history as the first Ugandan women’s sevens team in this prestigious competition.
The Lady Cranes will kick off their campaign against Belgium on January 12 in Dubai. Although facing the challenge without Lekuru, their resilience and determination promise an exciting journey on the world stage.
