The charity match this afternoon at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende turned into a challenging encounter for the football team of the Parliament of Uganda, coached by KCCA FC legend Tom Lwanga, as they faced off against UEFA legends led by the UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin. The Parliamentary team, captained by FUFA President Honorable Moses Magogo, conceded their first goal in the 2nd minute against Ceferin’s squad, who played with the confidence of a home team, showcasing exceptional football skills at the St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende. Ovokavic Micivoj scored four goals for the UEFA team, demonstrating impressive runs and breaking through the Parliament’s defense line.
The match concluded with a 7-1 victory for the UEFA team, with Aleksander Ceferin scoring a brace after a free kick and a penalty. Honorable Hamson Obua scored a consolation goal after Kirya Alex was fouled in the keeper’s box and awarded a penalty.
The champions of the EAC Inter-Parliamentary 2023 team proved no match for the UEFA team, which included players who had previously competed at the highest level of football.
The most memorable moment of the game occurred when Honorable Asuman Basalirwa executed dribbles with rapid footwork reminiscent of a young Cristiano Ronaldo, although it ultimately didn’t lead to success as his focus on the ball left him unaware of his surroundings, resulting in the opponents winning possession. This surprising turn left spectators in awe, cheering on the home team.
During his post-match interview, Ceferin expressed his fondness for Uganda, emphasizing its beauty. He acknowledged the Parliamentarians’ spirited performance on the field, describing the match as fair.
Honorable Moses Magogo reflected on the experience, stating, “It was a learning opportunity for us to compete against players who have reached the highest levels of the sport. We aim to improve in the second leg. Football is not just a game; it brings people together, as evidenced by the initiatives of the Aliguma Foundation. We look forward to more collaborative activities like these.”
Ceferin and his delegation are scheduled to visit the Aliguma Foundation in Masindi tomorrow, continuing their exploration of the positive impact of sports in underprivileged areas.
