FIG President’s Visit Marks Milestone in Uganda’s Gymnastics Development

The Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) is set to bolster the growth and development of gymnastics in Uganda, with FIG President Morinari Watanabe leading the charge during his visit to the country. On his arrival in Uganda, Watanabe was received by Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare and Gymnastics Association Uganda (GAU) President Aya Harriet.

Watanabe’s visit marks a significant step forward in the collaboration between FIG and Uganda’s gymnastics community. Speaking on the purpose of his visit, Watanabe emphasized the FIG’s commitment to supporting developing countries like Uganda in overcoming challenges and fostering growth in gymnastics. “Every year we organize a meeting with Gymnastics federations in developing countries to see how we can develop and solve various problems together. This year we are in Uganda to talk about the challenges and how we can support,” stated Watanabe.

As part of the visit, the FIG President, accompanied by other FIG members, will engage in a series of meetings from 26th to 28th February. This includes formal Executive Committee meetings where key decisions and strategies will be discussed. Notably, one of the Executive Committee meetings is held annually in a developing country, providing an opportunity for the FIG to gain insights into local conditions and offer tailored development solutions.

Harriet Ayaa, President of GAU, expressed optimism about the collaborative efforts with FIG, recognizing the potential for partnership and tangible outcomes. “There is an opportunity to foster partnerships with the FIG, as well as the individual members of the FIG Executive Committee, for tangible solutions to accelerated development of Gymnastics in Uganda. Hence it is necessary to create occasions for these discussions to take place,” remarked Ayaa.

This visit not only underscores the FIG’s commitment to global gymnastics development but also presents a unique opportunity for Uganda to showcase its strengths and challenges in gymnastics. With collaborative efforts and strategic partnerships, the FIG and GAU aim to propel the sport to new heights in Uganda. The FIG delegation is expected to depart Uganda this Friday after visiting Uganda’s gymnastics development clubs and schools.
