Artistic Impression of Akii-Bua Stadium

Initially overlooked as a venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Uganda’s Akii Bua Stadium is now set to undergo construction. The government has reversed its decision and is now focused on completing the stadium within 22 months.

State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, revealed that plans for the stadium’s construction had been finalized and funds secured.

In an unusual move, the contractor, a Joint Venture of Khator Sports and SAMCO, will foot the bill upfront, with the government paying upon completion.

The stadium holds significance as a tribute to John Akii Bua, Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist. Despite a pledge by President Yoweri Museveni in 2010 to honour Akii Bua’s legacy with this stadium in Lira, the project has dragged on until now.

The timing aligns with Uganda’s joint bid with Kenya and Tanzania to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. With plans solidifying for Akii Bua Stadium, it becomes a crucial piece of infrastructure in Uganda’s preparation for the tournament.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Joint Venture of Khator Sports and SAMCO ensures swift progress. The contractor will finance and construct the stadium under a pre-finance agreement.

State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, acknowledged President Museveni and Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Museveni, for their role in identifying the contractor. Their support underscores the government’s commitment to sports development and honouring national heroes like John Akii Bua.

As construction kicks off, anticipation grows not only for the completion of Akii Bua Stadium but also for the transformative impact it will have on sports in Uganda. With eyes set on hosting the Africa Cup of Nations, this stadium symbolizes progress and potential for Ugandan athletes and fans alike.
