Government Chief Whip and former state minister for sports, Hon. Hamson Obua, has urged the Rugby Sevens and Lady Cranes Sevens to uphold the culture of excellence they have showcased at the continental and global stage in recent years.
Obua made those remarks last evening at the teams’ victory party organized by sponsors Nile Special and the Uganda Rugby Union at Velocity Lounge in Kyanja, celebrating their gold win at the 13th Africa Games held in Ghana earlier this month.
The party, attended by former and current national rugby sevens players, coaches, fans, and officials, saw Obua, the chief guest of the evening, challenge the teams to sustain the winning culture, stating, “You have set the standard nationally, regionally, continentally, and internationally. You have set the standard, which is at the level of medals with gold as the first target.”
Sponsors Nile Special, represented by Trade Marketing Manager Rogers Ssozi, gifted each of the teams shs 50 million as a token of appreciation for their performance, acknowledging the side’s significant achievement at the African Games.
Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s a very exciting moment for Ugandan rugby and the sports sector, and you have made us proud. You have got the results of the hard work you have put in.”
Rugby Sevens coach Tolbert Onyango added, “We are very thankful for the support of our partners Nile Special, NCS. We feel their presence, which gives the boys morale, and there’s more to come from the squad as the support comes through,” as the teams prepare to resume training next week ahead of the third round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in May.
