Football fans have condemned steep transit fare increases to reach World Cup venues in the US, branding them “a disgrace”.
NJ Transit is reportedly set to charge over $100 for return tickets from Manhattan to MetLife Stadium – usually $12.90 – while Boston fares to Gillette Stadium will rise to $80 from $20.
Supporters’ groups accused FIFA of pricing out loyal fans, while US politicians including Governor Mikie Sherrill and Senator Chuck Schumer demanded FIFA cover transport costs. FIFA countered that host city agreements required travel “at cost”, not free.
With federal funds already allocated to host cities, critics warn the hikes risk shutting out the atmosphere-driving fans who make the World Cup unique.
