Anisha Shahir Muhoozi, the CEO of KCCA FC, expressed satisfaction following her team’s 2-0 triumph over rivals SC Villa. The match, which took place at Namboole stadium, deviated from the norm as KCCA opted to host it away from their traditional grounds at the MTN Omondi stadium in Lugogo.
The decision to relocate the match stemmed from an agreement between KCCA and FUFA, prompted by CAF’s request to conduct test matches at the renovated Namboole stadium, assessing its suitability for hosting international matches.
Speaking to sports journalist Peter Tabu after the game, Anisha remarked, “I’m happy that we have contributed to whatever CAF decision will be made about Namboole. We hope that it will be positive.”
She also acknowledged initial skepticism among fans regarding the venue change but celebrated the team’s success in securing maximum points.
Reflecting on the high turnout at Namboole, Muhoozi admitted, “We didn’t anticipate the numbers we got at Namboole. It was short notice, and we didn’t publicize the game a lot. The tickets also went up for sale late.”
Despite these challenges, she noted the enthusiasm among fans to witness football returning to Uganda’s revered football home.
While acknowledging the logistical hurdles encountered, Muhoozi emphasized the importance of a thorough review process.
“We are yet to do a review meeting, but I know there were challenges in terms of access and ticketing,” she stated. This, she added, presents an opportunity for Namboole’s leadership to address any deficiencies promptly.
Uganda is slated to host Botswana and Algeria in June for the World Cup qualifiers. The approval of Namboole stadium to host these critical matches remains uncertain. Should approval be withheld, Uganda may be forced to explore alternative venues outside the country.
