Sport-S Aim to Extend Winning Streak in Volleyball Playoffs Final

Volleyball enthusiasts in Uganda are in for a sensational weekend as the National Volleyball playoff finals take centre stage on Sunday, 12th May 2024. The action-packed day will kick off at 9:00am with a Serie B men’s match between Bugema University and the Police team.

Later, the 11:00am clash will feature KCB Nkumba locking horns with the hard-to-beat KCCA in the women’s Serie A semi-finals. KCCA are hoping to bounce back from their loss to KCB Nkumba in Game One, which ended 3 sets to 2 in favour of the latter.

The second women’s Serie A semi-final will follow suit at 2:00pm, featuring the talented Sport-S against the determined Ndejje University. Ndejje head into Game Two having beaten Sport-S 3 sets to 1 in the first game.

The match of the day will be the day’s final game featuring five-time men’s champions KAVC and the defending champions Sport-S, who are just 2 wins away from defending their title. The highly anticipated game will start at 4:00pm.

Sport-S are aiming to build on last Sunday’s win against KAVC in Game One, where they relied on their dominant middle blockers to secure a convincing 3-0 victory over KAVC. Sport-S’ blockers Samuel Engwau and Emmanuel Okia provided a solid defensive presence at the net, while Malic Damulira’s exceptional reception allowed Sport-S to run their offence effectively. Despite KAVC’s efforts to mount a comeback in the later sets, Sport-S remained composed and closed out the match. The game ended 3-0 in favour of Sport-S.

After the game, Sport-S head coach Benon Mugisha (coach Maggy) acknowledged that they had to make some adjustments, particularly to contain the attacking threat of KAVC’s players, especially Geoffrey Onapa. He’s ready to face them again though.

KAVC’s coach Memory Dube was pleased with her attacker Onapa’s threat, but confessed that she needed another one to complement him. “We needed another attacker to complement Onapa and help us close sets,” she said. However, she’s feeling confident heading into Game Two with Sport-S, “The boys made a statement on how we ended Set Two and Set Three. It’s not over until it’s over, I should say,” she confidently stressed after the game.

The matches will be held at the Old Kampala Arena, adjacent to the Old Kampala (Gaddafi) Mosque.
