As anticipated, the title run-in delivered its dose of entertainment on Saturday, as some StarTimes Uganda Premier League title contenders picked up vital wins while others dropped vital points.
League leaders BUL maintained their position at the summit with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gadaffi at home in Njeru.
After a slow start and missing vital chances throughout the game, the home fans’ mood had started changing by the 80th minute. However, Innocent Tezikya’s 84th-minute strike was enough to secure maximum points for the Njeru side, and give fans hope for their first ever Premier League trophy.
Elsewhere, Kitara staged a dramatic comeback against Busoga United, overcoming a 2-1 halftime deficit to win 3-2 and move into second place, just one point behind BUL.
Record Champions Villa showed their worth when they won 2-0 comfortably away against UPDF in Bombo, courtesy of an early 13-minute goal from Jonah Kakande and a late 88th minute from Hakim Kiwanuka. The Jogoos are now one point behind leaders BUL, and level on points wuth second placed Kitara.
However, the weekend was not without its disappointments for some of the title contenders. Defending champions Vipers were held to a 0-0 draw by NEC, a result that sees them drop to fourth place, two points adrift of the leaders with two games to go.
13-time champions KCCA are now officially out of the title race after losing to URA away at Wankulukuku. Saidi Kyeyune’s late goal for the tax collectors was enough to drain the kasasiro boys’ title hopes for this season. They are now 7 points behind BUL, which means that they’re now mathematically out of the title race.
