After nearly two years of service as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Major General (Rtd) George Owino bids farewell to Uganda. His tenure, which began in August 2022, has left an indelible mark on both diplomatic relations and the sporting community, particularly within the realm of golf.
General Owino’s passion for golf is well-known, earning him the distinction of being the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Patron. As he concluded his term, UGC recently honored him during the last month’s Stanbic Mug, dedicating the event to his service and commitment. During his farewell dinner at the Uganda Golf Club over the weekend, General Owino shared insights with NBS Tee Off, the channel’s weekly golf magazine, reflecting on his time in Uganda.
“It has been a wonderful experience on all fronts,” General Owino remarked. “From diplomatic endeavors to social engagements, and of course, the golfing fraternity, Uganda has offered me great warmth and friendship.”
Acknowledging the hospitality of Ugandans, General Owino emphasized the enduring partnership between Kenya and Uganda. He expressed delight in witnessing the growth of the game of golf during his tenure, attributing part of this success to his efforts in mentoring and supporting aspiring golfers.
Club Captain Paul Rukundo lauded General Owino as an exceptional figure, both on and off the golf course. “General Owino epitomizes the spirit of competition and sportsmanship,” Rukundo remarked. “His dedication to the game has not only elevated his own skills but has also inspired others within the golfing community.”
In his own words, General Owino reflected, “Golf transcends borders and cultures, fostering mutual respect. It has been a privilege to contribute to the growth of this sport in Uganda and strengthen the bonds between our nations.”
As General Owino prepares to embark on his next chapter, his legacy as a diplomat and a golfer will continue to resonate within the hearts of those he has touched.
