Despite falling short in their quest for the 2023/24 StarTimes Uganda Premier League title, Kitara’s first vice-captain and midfielder, Paul Mucureezi, has expressed pride in his team’s remarkable achievements this season.
Speaking after Kitara’s loss against Bright Stars yesterday, Mucureezi acknowledged that while they may have missed out on the trophy, the newly-promoted team’s performance has exceeded all expectations.
“We’ve had a very fantastic season, something no one was expecting from Kitara when we were promoted,” Mucureezi said. “Many people said that we were going to battle relegation, but at the end of the day, we came out as title contenders,” he added.
The midfielder attributed Kitara’s loss to Bright Stars at the crutial stage of the season to missed opportunities. “Today wasn’t our day, we had many missed opportunities, we did our best but couldn’t get the best result,” he explained.
Asked whether his team are still in the title race, after their loss, Mucureezi stated, “We’ve missed out on the trophy, this is the game that we needed to win, but we haven’t.”
Mucureezi then went on to thank the Kitara fans that have been behind the team throughout the campaign.
“I thank the fans of Kitara football club, it is rare to find such fans in Ugandan football,” he said.
“We even had away games where we had more fans than the home team, big up to the fans,” he added.
Kitara’s loss to Bright stars left them sitting in fourth place with 51 points with one game to go. They will need to win against Gadaffi at home in Masindi and hope that Villa, BUL, and Vipers all lose in order to be crowned champions.
However, the team still has a chance to end their glorious season with silverware as they are Uganda Cup finalists and will face NEC in a final that will be played on 25th May.
