SC Villa’s Path to Redemption

SC Villa’s Path to Redemption

For the past two decades, Sports Club Villa has endured a turbulent period, despite being Uganda’s top football club. Relegation battles and internal conflicts have dimmed its past glory, while rivals KCCA FC, and Vipers continue to take the spotlight. In 2021, SC Villa missed out on a fixture for the Star Times Uganda Premier League season 2021/22 just days before kickoff because it did not fulfil one of the basic licensing requirements.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope as SC Villa currently leads the Uganda Premier League standings. After two decades devoid of silverware, they seem poised to break the trophy drought. Their closest brush with success came in last season when they faltered on the final day, relinquishing the title to Vipers.

The return of Hajji Omar Mandela has stabilized the club’s management and finances. No longer are SC Villa players making headlines for unpaid wages.

Looking forward, the SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye hints at a revival, aiming to restore the club to its former glory. He emphasizes the importance of consistent success and gradual progress over instant gratification.

“We’re not just in it for a quick win. Lifting a trophy is important, but what really matters is keeping that momentum going. Our club president has made it clear that we are dedicated to laying the foundation brick by brick. We aim to slowly but surely restore Sports Club Villa to its former glory. We believe we have what it takes to make it happen,” he said. He continued, “A lot has happened in the past. Villa experienced internal conflicts, power struggles, and differing opinions. But now, in terms of organization, we are unified and speak with one voice. We are moving in the right direction.”

With a record 16 Uganda Premier League trophies under their belt and the possibility of securing the 17th, SC Villa remains Uganda’s most successful club albeit a 20 year dry spell since the last title. If they continue their strong performance, both on and off the pitch, that drought ends this Saturday!
