Uganda Rugby Sevens captain William Nkore is confident the team is set for the challenge in pool B of the HSBC World Rugby Challenger Series due this weekend.
The team arrived in Munich, Germany earlier this week and have continued preparations ahead of the games as they face Tonga, Mexico and Hong Kong China on opening day tomorrow, 18th May 2024.
With the side eighth on the overall log, coach Tolbert Onyango opted for a youthful squad to offer exposure for the promising talent with only the top four teams guaranteed qualification for the Madrid playoffs.
Team captain Nkore believes the team is ready for the challenge ahead.
“We have had a number of pitch, gym and video review sessions of our opponents. We play Tonga and Hong Kong China which are immense teams with big boys while Mexico play a running game and the team has been prepared towards that side of the game,” he noted.
Regarding the target set, he says the team aims to reach the latter stages of the series.
“The goal of the team is to win one game at a time and every game is a final for us. We aim to make the knockouts and build from there on to the top. It’s a mixture of the young and old with the young boys daring to go,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Lady Cranes Sevens will look to finish among the top four of their HSBC World Rugby Challenger Series games in Krakow, Poland in order to qualify for the Madrid playoffs. The 12-player side is coached by Charles Onen and captained by Peace Lekuru.
