EURO 2024: What You Need to Know

The 2024 UEFA European Championship (EURO 2024) is set to take place in Germany from June 14th to July 14th, 2024.

Germany and Spain are the most successful teams in the history of the tournament, each winning the competition three times. Germany, who have featured at every EURO since 1972, won the competition in 1972 and 1980 as West Germany, and the reunited Germany was victorious at EURO ’96.

France and Italy have triumphed on two occasions, while six other teams, the Soviet Union, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece, and Portugal, have won the competition once. Additionally, Yugoslavia, Belgium and England have qualified for the final without success.

The competition was established in 1960 and has since grown in stature, with the 2024 edition set to feature 24 teams. This year’s competition will be the 17th edition of the tournament.

Germany, the host nation, are in Group A, alongside Hungary, Switzerland, and Scotland. Group B will feature the defending champions Italy, who have won the competition twice, along with the other joint record champions Spain, as well as Albania and Croatia.

Favorites England are drawn in Group C, alongside Slovenia, two-time finalists Serbia, and Denmark, who won the competition in 1992. Group D has two-time winners France, one-time champions the Netherlands, Austria, and Poland.

Group E will feature Belgium, who have surprisingly never won the competition, but were finalists in 1980, along with Slovakia, Romania, and Ukraine. Group F will have 2016 winners Portugal, together with the Czech Republic, who won the competition 20 years prior, as well as Turkey and Georgia, who are making their debut in the competition.

The tournament will be held across ten host stadiums in Germany. The Munich Football Arena will be staging matches for the second EURO in succession, having been one of 11 stadiums that held games during UEFA EURO 2020, which was jointly hosted by cities of different European countries.

The other nine host venues are Borussia Dortmund’s 62,000-seat BVB Stadion Dortmund, the Olympiastadion Berlin, Cologne Stadium, Düsseldorf Arena, Frankfurt Arena, Arena AufSchalke, Volksparkstadion Hamburg, Leipzig Stadium, and Stuttgart Arena.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 16, along with the four best third-placed finishers.

The final will be played at the iconic Olympiastadion in Berlin on July 14th. The winner of EURO 2024 will compete in the 2025 CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions against the 2024 Copa America winner.

NBS Sport secured the broadcasting rights to air select matches for the Euros, and will broadcast twelve matches including the final. Fans can expect the thrills of EURO 2024 live on the leading 24/7 sports channel in the land.
