The second edition of the FUFA TV Cup is set to captivate the nation once more, following a significant expansion from its inaugural year. The tournament, launched by FUFA Executive Committee Member and Chairperson of the organizing committee Apollo Ahimbisibwe, promises increased excitement with participation from 65 schools across Uganda.
“The first edition, which was a pilot project, was a success. We received overwhelming interest from across the country, and I guarantee that the second edition will provide an even better experience,” Ahimbisibwe stated at the launch event held at the FUFA Complex.
FUFA Deputy CEO-Football Decolas Kiiza highlighted the tournament’s role in the FUFA Technical Master Plan, emphasizing the importance of nurturing and identifying young talent. “Competitions like the FUFA TV Cup offer a platform to raw talent,” Kiiza noted.
The first edition featured eight schools and was conducted on a home and away basis. St. Mary’s College Kisubi emerged victorious, defeating Kiira College Butiki 2-1 in the final at Muteesa II Stadium Wankulukuku. Gift Fred Mutalya from Kiira College Butiki was the top scorer with eight goals in five games.
The second edition kicks off with a preliminary round on June 16, 2024, with Nganwa High School facing St. Kagwa High School at Nganwa High School Playground in Sheema District. The winner will join 63 other schools in the Round of 64, starting on June 29-30, 2024. The competition intensifies through the subsequent rounds, culminating in the National Championship at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru, from August 28 to September 15, 2024.
The tournament is segmented into 12 chapters to streamline logistics and ease movement of teams. These include the Western, Buganda, Buganda-Masaka, East Buganda, Rwenzori, Busoga, Kampala, Luo, Elgon, Bukedi, Bunyoro, and West Nile chapters.
Jeremiah Mugerwa, Vice Chairperson of the organizing committee, emphasized adherence to strict standards and laws, cautioning against the use of non bona fide students.
As the tournament unfolds, new heroes will emerge, and unforgettable moments will be etched into Ugandan school football history. The nation eagerly awaits the kickoff, ready to support their schools and witness the rise of future football stars.
