As Uganda gears up for the forthcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, former Uganda Cranes captain Andy Mwesigwa is hopeful the Uganda Cranes will qualify for the final tournament in Morocco.
This follows the qualification draws held last week that put Uganda in group K alongside favorites South Africa, Congo Brazzaville and South Sudan.
“The group is fair and I think we can qualify. Apart from South Africa which I think will be the biggest challenge, the rest we can negotiate past them,” Mwesigwa told NBS SPORT.
Despite ranking South Africa high, the 40 year old former center back who scored in 4-0 Uganda Cranes home win over Congo Brazzaville in 2012 believes that the Bafana Bafana are also not at their best.
“South Africa is the biggest side in the group but we can find ways of getting points especially when we host them. It is not the old fierce South Africa and with determination from the players coupled with good preparations, we can make it,” he added.
Uganda that last appeared at the biggest continental stage in 2019 in Egypt where it was ejected at the last 16, has missed the last two AFCON editions.
