Magogo Says His Move to Parliament Has Evident Results on Football

FUFA President Moses Magogo has said the results of his decision to join Uganda’s Parliament have been evident. He said this during a live X Spaces session on Sunday afternoon which he said was aimed at interacting with football fans and addressing various concerns within the sport.

Magogo emphasized the importance of engaging directly with the government to secure funding and improve infrastructure for football in Uganda.

“For so long, we had explained ourselves to the government about funding and infrastructure but as FUFA, we took a decision that we need to go to the political space and explain in smaller meetings, on the floor of Parliament and the results are evident,” he stated.

He pointed to the extensive parliamentary debates on the status of Namboole Stadium, which led to the fast-tracking of its renovation to ensure Uganda could host the June World Cup qualifiers at home.

Additionally, Parliament pushed for the release of funds to initiate the construction of Hoima Stadium.

Addressing concerns about accountability within FUFA, Magogo assured that the federation undergoes rigorous checks.

“There is talk about lack of accountability at FUFA but I want to tell you that FUFA undergoes a three-way accountability check. Government for the money for the National Teams, FIFA for the money we get for operations and projects plus internal auditors,” he explained.

On the issue of the FUFA presidency being perceived as inaccessible, Magogo clarified that the criteria for candidacy were established long before his administration.

“There is a misconception that FUFA locks out people who want to stand for Presidency. This is not true but we have a criteria we follow and some of those regulations were not set by my administration, we found them in place,” he said.

It should however, be noted that the criteria for FUFA President has undergone various amendments with the latest being October last year.

According to amended FUFA rules, a presidential candidate must be an Executive Committee member of FUFA or a member of a FUFA affiliate for the past four consecutive years and must have a FAMACO II Certification.

Magogo’s term as FUFA President ends next year, and it is widely expected that he will seek re-election as Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania prepare to jointly host the 2027 AFCON.
