Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, made her highly anticipated return to the Olympics at the Paris 2024 Games on Sunday.
Competing in the women’s artistic gymnastics qualification, Biles received an enthusiastic welcome from a star-studded crowd in the French capital.
Biles’ return comes after a challenging period during the Tokyo Games, where she experienced the “twisties,” a condition causing a temporary loss of spatial awareness. This led to her withdrawal from the team finals, sparking doubts about her future in the sport.
After a two-year hiatus, Biles, now 27, re-entered the Olympic arena with the support of her teammates and a therapist. She commenced the competition on the balance beam, regarded as one of the most difficult apparatus, and scored a competition-leading 14.733 points. Her performance was met with loud cheers and applause from the audience.
Wearing a shimmering leotard adorned with thousands of Swarovski crystals, Biles appeared composed and focused. She smiled and exhaled as she checked her score on the scoreboard. Among the crowd were celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Tom Cruise, and Anna Wintour, who witnessed her impressive comeback.
“She just competes by herself,” remarked British gymnast Ruby Evans. “We’ve never had anyone like her before, and I don’t think we ever will, ever again.”
