Mixed Feelings for Uganda as Zimbabwe Lifts Rugby Africa Cup

On Sunday evening, July 28, 2024, Zimbabwe emerged as the champion of the Rugby Africa Cup 2024, held at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda. The tournament featured eight teams competing in a significant event for African rugby.

In the finals, Zimbabwe triumphed over Algeria 29-3 in a thrilling match at the vibrant and fully packed Mandela Stadium.

The host nation, Uganda, also had a reason to celebrate as they secured fifth place after defeating Senegal.

Uganda’s game was intense until Joseph Aredo scored a decisive penalty.

However, some Ugandan fans expressed dissatisfaction with their team’s performance, urging them to aim for the title in next year’s tournament.

Uganda Rugby President Godwin acknowledged the challenges faced in organizing the event but praised the team’s efforts and the successful execution of the tournament.

“We endured everything and made sure everything was on point,” he said.

The Mandela National Stadium in Namboole proved to be an outstanding venue for the tournament, offering a vibrant and supportive environment for both players and fans.

Entertainment was a central feature of the tournament, with performances from popular singers like Winnie Nwagi, Jose Chameleon, and Carol Kasiita, who energized the fans during the after-party celebrations.

Uganda, known for its love of beer, saw fans and players enjoying beers during and after the games.

The tournament also provided an opportunity for small and medium-scale businesses to profit from selling food, drinks, and merchandise and offering services like mobile money transactions.
