Women’s Champions League: Optimism Is High In Kawempe’s Camp

Ahead of the 2024 CECAFA Zonal CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers in Ethiopia, Uganda Women Super League champions Kawempe Muslim Ladies have been flagged off.

During the flag-off ceremony in Kawempe on Wednesday one would feel a sense of optimism about the championship.

“We took part in a very competitive league last season and managed to win the title and we remain with the same winning spirit,” head coach Ayub Khalifa said at the presser.

“It has been a rollercoaster of a journey for us and the management has fully supported the team and after thorough preparation I believe we are ready for the battle.”

The 20-woman team will be captained by Phiona Nabulime who has trust in his teammates to make a good account of themselves.

“We are a strong team with a lot of talent and potential to perform well and that was evident with the effort each player put in during our preparations,” Nabulime noted.

The club president Zuraika Kibirige noted that Kawempe are serial and renowned winners and that should motivate the players.

The five-time winners of the FUFA WSL will travel to Ethiopia on Saturday aboard Ethiopian Airlines.

At the tournament that kicks off on Saturday, August, Kawempe are pooled in Group B with Tanzania powerhouse Simba Queens.

Burundi’s Buyenzi and FAD of Djibouti are the other two teams that complete Kawempe’s Group B.

Lady Doves, She Corporate, and Kampala Queens are the other three Ugandan teams that have played in this tournament previously.
