In a homecoming dinner held on Thursday evening, Uganda’s Olympic heroes were showered with praise and financial rewards for their outstanding performances at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The National Council of Sports hosted a celebratory dinner to honor the athletes who brought immense pride to the nation.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of substantial cash prizes for the athletes.
Joshua Cheptegei, who clinched the gold medal in the grueling 10,000m race, was rewarded with a staggering 100 million Uganda Shillings.
Peruth Chemutai, who secured the silver medal in the steeplechase, was presented with 50 million Uganda Shillings for her exceptional achievement.
In a further show of appreciation, the National Council of Sports revealed that all Ugandan Olympians will receive an additional 10 million Shillings on top of the 16 million Shillings they had already received as allowances.
Earlier in the day, the athletes were accorded a heroes’ welcome in Parliament, where members of the August House lauded their exceptional skills and dedication.
The lawmakers expressed their gratitude for the athletes’ contributions to the country’s image on the global stage.
Uganda will now shift attention to the Paris 2024 Paralympics where four athletes are set to represent the nation.
