The highly anticipated Elgon Cup rugby competition is set to return in November 2024, as announced by Kenya Rugby Union chairman Sasha Mutai. The two-legged tie will feature the Rugby Cranes of Uganda and the Kenya Simbas.
The first match will be held in Kampala on November 2nd, followed by the return leg in Nairobi on November 9th.
The Elgon Cup, named after the iconic Mount Elgon that straddles the border between Kenya and Uganda, has been a cornerstone of East African rugby since its inception in 2004 for men’s teams and 2006 for women’s teams.
The competition has fostered a fierce rivalry between the two nations, with matches typically played at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi and the Kyadondo Grounds in Kampala.
While Kenya has historically dominated the Elgon Cup, Uganda has also enjoyed its share of victories, making the competition a thrilling spectacle for rugby fans in both countries.
It remains to be seen if Namboole will host this year’s edition given the grounds successfully hosted the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup where Kenya emerged 4th and Uganda 5th.
