Having participated in a two-month high-performance camp in South Africa earlier this year, 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Open winner Regan Akena believes that the experience played a key role in his victory.
The 19-year-old Lugazi Golf Club player overcame 2021 winner Joseph Cwinyaai in the final stages of the tournament, which concluded on Saturday at the Entebbe Club, recording a 3-over 287 score for the win.
Akena led the field in the 2018 edition but was unable to clinch the overall title. It’s moments like this, coupled with recent experiences, that enabled him to secure this year’s championship.
“The lessons I got in South Africa over the last two months helped me change my game. It improved my practice, and it’s the reason I won this tournament,” Akena said.
Looking ahead, Akena has ambitious plans.
“After high school, I would like to move to the United States to further my education and career, and this win will support my dreams,” he stated.
Over 100 players from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda participated in this year’s Johnnie Walker Amateur Open at the Entebbe Club.
