Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Joseph Put has hinted at giving new players a chance to shine in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against South Sudan.
As the Cranes prepare to face their neighbors in the first leg at Namboole this Friday, Put believes it’s the perfect opportunity for fresh faces to make an impact.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Put emphasized the significance of seizing such moments.
“For the new players, this is an opportunity to showcase themselves. One game can change your life. No one knows what the future holds, but I believe these players have what it takes to achieve something great.”
Put noted that the squad is youthful but expressed confidence in their potential, especially with home-ground support.
“We have a young team, but I have full confidence in them. Playing at home, I know the supporters will push us to another level. Everyone has been working hard with focus and discipline, and I’m confident we are in a good position to deliver results,” he added.
Among the new call-ups is KCCA FC youngster Shafik Nana Kwikiriza, who has earned his first national team selection.
Kasasiro Boys striker Derrick Nsibambi, a familiar face, returns under Put’s management.
Additionally, Swedish-based youngster Calvin Kabuye and KCCA midfielder Saidi Mayanja, who are yet to make an appearance despite consecutive call-ups, could finally get their chance.
The Uganda Cranes enter the match on top of Group K, tied with South Africa at four points but ahead on goal difference.
South Sudan, on the other hand, have yet to register a point after defeats to Congo Brazzaville and South Africa.
This crucial encounter offers Uganda a prime opportunity to solidify their group lead and boost their AFCON 2025 qualification hopes.
The Cranes will be looking to continue their dominance over South Sudan while using the platform to build for the future by integrating new talent into the fold.
