Despite Manchester United’s tough start to the season, goalkeeper André Onana has emerged as a key figure, leading the Premier League in clean sheets.
With four clean sheets under his belt, the Cameroonian shot-stopper is standing out as one of the best goalkeepers in the league.
Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, met with Onana at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala on Sunday, where the two shared a light moment discussing the goalkeeper’s impressive form.
Tayebwa was full of praise for Onana, acknowledging his growth and leadership on the field.
“Onana is now the star of the club. You can see how much more confident he is, and he communicates better than before,” said Tayebwa.
“While the overall team performance has been a challenge, players like Onana are really stepping up.”
Onana’s return to Uganda follows his earlier visit in September, where he kept a clean sheet during Cameroon’s goalless draw against Zimbabwe in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
After leaving Uganda, Onana continued his fine form. He saved a penalty and kept a clean sheet in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Southampton.
His efforts earned him the Premier League’s Save of the Month award for September after his brilliant double save in a goalless draw with Crystal Palace.
As Onana prepares to lead Cameroon against Kenya at Namboole on Monday, he will be hoping to add another clean sheet to his record.
Following the international break, he will return to Manchester United, where they face Brentford in their next Premier League fixture.
Onana’s standout performances have provided a glimmer of hope for Manchester United fans amidst the club’s current struggles, with Tayebwa highlighting his importance.
“We are Manchester United, and everyone understands the frustrations. But players like Onana give us something to be proud of.”
