Mbale Heroes Football Club has reappointed Asaph Mwebaze as their head coach, marking his return just months after an abrupt departure towards the end of last season.
Mwebaze, a CAF B licensed coach, left the club under controversial circumstances in April, citing unpaid salaries and friction with club officials.
His exit came as the team was in third place in the FUFA Big League, and on the brink of promotion to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
Mwebaze’s replacement, Simon Ddungu, led the team to clinch a return to the top flight after nearly two decades in the lower divisions, and coach Richard Malinga took over at the start of this season.
However, just three games into the new season, Richard Malinga resigned, citing interference from club management.
Now, with Mbale Heroes sitting 13th on the UPL table after earning just three points from four games, Mwebaze has made a surprise return.
His immediate challenge will be to help the team avoid relegation and bring stability to the side. His first task will be an eastern derby game against Lugazi FC tomorrow at Lugazi Stadium, Najjembe.
Mwebaze’s coaching career is decorated, particularly with his time at Maroons, where he won three Big League titles and secured UPL promotion on three separate occasions.
He has also coached Bright Stars, Onduparaka, Nyamityobora, and Soccer Shots Houston U17 Academy in Texas, USA.
His last UPL stint was with Bright Stars in the 2022/23 season, where he guided the team to a respectable ninth-place finish and a Stanbic Uganda Cup semifinal.
