International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, currently on a two-day visit to Uganda, marked a symbolic gesture of his time in the country by planting a tree at the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Center in Entebbe on October 22, 2024.
The tree-planting ceremony serves as a lasting memory of his visit and reflects his commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation, values that align with the IOC’s broader goals.
President Bach, who arrived earlier in the day, was received by a delegation from the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) led by UOC President Donald Rukare, alongside Olympic Gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei.
Speaking about the significance of the moment, officials from the UOC praised the gesture, noting it as a testament to the growing ties between Uganda and the Olympic Movement.
The tree planting at the conservation center highlights the importance of environmental responsibility, a cause that the IOC has championed through various initiatives around the world.
Bach’s visit continues tomorrow, where he is scheduled to meet with Uganda’s Prime Minister and other senior government officials.
Following these engagements, he will tour the Game Connect Project, a sports initiative funded by the Olympic Refugee Foundation, which promotes social inclusion and development through sports for refugees and displaced individuals.
Bach’s visit to Uganda is part of a broader farewell tour of five African nations, with Kenya being his next stop.
