Oliver Mbekeka made history as the first female head coach of a Uganda Premier League club, guiding Lugazi to a memorable 1-0 victory over Express in her debut match at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo on Tuesday.
The win not only marked a personal achievement for Mbekeka but also set a new precedent in Ugandan football, inspiring many along the way.
Reflecting on her historic moment, Mbekeka expressed gratitude and pride for the opportunity:
“I am grateful to God because I have been praying for this moment,” she told NS Sport.
“I also want to thank the club owner, Abdul Kawuulu, for trusting me with this opportunity, and the fans, but most importantly the players who made this memorable.”
Mbekeka’s success in her first match as head coach is more than just a victory on the field, it’s a symbolic step forward for gender equality in sports.
Her journey serves as a powerful inspiration to aspiring female coaches across Uganda.
“This role calls for passion, love for the game, and belief,” she noted.
“I’ve had sleepless nights thinking about how we could beat Express FC, and I’m proud that the players listened and executed the game plan that led us to victory.”
The match was decided by a single goal in the 25th minute when Sam Ssemugugu scored with a powerful header, securing Lugazi FC’s first-ever victory in the Uganda Premier League.
This historic goal lifted the newly promoted side from the bottom of the table to 13th place, with five points from six games.
Lugazi FC’s next challenge comes against table leaders NEC FC, and the team’s momentum will be tested as they look to climb further up the standings.
It remains to be seen whether Mbekeka will continue as interim coach for her first home game or if Uganda Cranes legend David Obua, who is rumored to be a contender for the permanent role, will take over from the recently sacked Sadiq Ssempigi.
Regardless of what the future holds, Oliver Mbekeka’s trailblazing debut has already made waves and set a new precedent in Ugandan football.
